Common Electrical Problems in Indian Homes

After enough call-outs, the same handful of problems account for most of them. Here is what they are and why they keep happening.

Electrical faults feel individual when they happen to you. Across hundreds of call-outs they turn out to be remarkably repetitive — a handful of underlying causes, dressed up in different symptoms.

Recognising which of them you are looking at is genuinely useful. It tells you whether something needs attention today or next month, and it lets you describe the problem well enough that an electrician can arrive with the right parts.

Loose connections, which cause almost everything else

If there is one root cause behind more domestic electrical problems than any other, it is a terminal that is not tight. The mechanism is simple and relentless: copper expands when a circuit carries load and contracts when it cools, and over years of that cycling a terminal that was tight when installed works loose.

A loose terminal has resistance. Resistance under load produces heat. Heat accelerates the loosening and degrades the surrounding insulation. Left long enough, that is how a connection becomes a fire.

Symptoms are varied enough that people rarely connect them: flickering lights, a socket that works intermittently, a warm faceplate, a faint smell near the board, or an appliance that behaves oddly on one point but not another.

Circuits carrying more than they were designed for

Nearly every installation more than fifteen years old is running a load its designer never anticipated. Air conditioning in multiple rooms, a geyser per bathroom, induction cooking, a washing machine, a dishwasher, and a household full of devices — none of which existed in the same quantity when the wiring was specified.

The visible symptom is tripping. The invisible one is cable running warmer than it should for years on end, which shortens insulation life across the whole circuit.

The correct response is to separate loads onto their own circuits. The incorrect one — which we still find — is to fit a larger MCB so the tripping stops.

Inadequate or absent earthing

This is the most serious recurring finding and the least visible. Earthing that was adequate when installed corrodes; earth conductors get disconnected during alterations and never reconnected; three-pin sockets get fitted with no earth conductor behind them at all.

The symptom to never ignore

A tingle from a tap, a geyser body, a fridge door, a washing machine casing or a metal window frame means current is finding a path to earth through you. Stop using the appliance and have the earthing checked the same day.

In flats the building earth is shared, so the condition of what reaches your board — and how it is distributed from there — is what matters. It is checkable in an hour and it is the finding we treat as most urgent.

Monsoon earth leakage

Every year, from the first serious rain, the pattern of calls changes. Tripping that was not happening in May starts happening in July, usually on the RCCB rather than an individual MCB.

The cause is water reaching a connection: a terrace or balcony light that is not properly rated, an outdoor socket with a failed seal, water tracking down inside a conduit from a roof penetration, or damp getting into a wall where a cable runs.

  • Outdoor sockets where the gland or cover no longer keeps water out
  • Water tracking into conduit from a roof or parapet penetration
  • Damp walls in older masonry reaching aged cable insulation
  • Bathroom fittings not rated for the position they are in

The right fix is to find the water and stop it. The wrong one, which we are occasionally asked for, is to disable the RCCB for the season.

The loose neutral

A poor neutral connection produces symptoms that seem to make no sense: lights dimming and brightening as other appliances switch, equipment behaving erratically, or voltage at a socket reading oddly.

It happens because with a compromised neutral the return path becomes resistive, and the voltage each appliance sees starts depending on what else is drawing current. In severe cases it can push voltage above normal at some points, which damages electronics.

It is worth treating as urgent, both because of the damage it does and because a neutral connection deteriorating at the board is generating heat while it does so.

Boards that grew rather than being designed

Very common, and the underlying condition behind several of the problems above. A board installed for a particular set of circuits has been added to repeatedly — an AC point here, a new floor there — until every way is used, conductors are doubled up under single terminals, and nobody knows what feeds what.

Replacing the board with one properly sized, protected, labelled and left with spare capacity is a half-day job in most flats, and it is the change that improves an older installation more than any other single piece of work.

Safety first

Any burning smell, visible scorching, or shock sensation from a fitting or appliance should be treated as urgent. Isolate the affected circuit and have it inspected before using it again.

Why do my lights dim when the fridge or AC starts?

A brief dip when a large motor starts is normal. A pronounced or lasting dim suggests a loose connection, an undersized circuit or a compromised neutral, and is worth having checked.

Why does everything start tripping when the monsoon begins?

Water is reaching a connection somewhere — usually terrace or balcony lighting, an outdoor point, or damp in a wall. The water needs finding and excluding; the protection is doing its job.
