Working carefully in old buildings

The historic houses in Rander need a different approach from anything else we do. Carved timber facades, old plasterwork and internal woodwork are worth preserving, and chasing a conduit run through them is often the wrong answer even when it is technically possible. Surface conduit routed along a line the building already has — under a beam, behind a cornice, along a skirting — usually looks better and does less damage.

These properties also tend to have had electrical work added in stages over many decades, sometimes with several families sharing one original supply arrangement. Establishing what actually feeds what is the necessary first step, and it is often the most valuable hour of the whole job.

Along Rander Road the picture changes completely: newer apartment blocks and shop units where the wiring is modern but minimal, and the calls are board capacity, additional circuits and fit-out work rather than careful conservation.
